    DEP/DUA/1/40/21 (Normalised version)

    Alexander Burn

    (1786-1787)

    No21 Alexander Burn at 60.

Of case of this patient at loss to form any decided opinion.

Evidently however principally an affection of alimentary canal.

And from sense of globus rising from inferior part to stomach, have, though patient a male, & far advanced in life, some appearance of chief characteristic of Hysteria.

And some with whom globus hystericus, consider as pathognomonic.

Am however for my own part of very different opinion.

And as many instances of Hysteria where this entirely wanting, so in not a few cases globus presents where no Hysteria.

This I consider as being case in present instance.

And disposed to view affection as one of numerous forms under which Dyspepsia may appear.

Yet must be allowed that with peculiar circumstances.

    Such for example as hunger.

But of these dare hardly venture to say anything, till know something more respecting them.

And can hardly therefore offer any conjecture as to prognosis.

But after continuing for five years can hardly expect speedy removal.

Yet more chance that has of late of itself sufficiently diminished.

Have at present put patient on Stomachic Pill Aloe Rhum Ol. Men

But if nothing to alter sentiments trial of Caustic Alkaline Lixivium.
