    Robert Pringle

    1786

    No34 February 10th 1786

Robert Pringle at 53 a servant is affected with a frequent inclination for voiding his urine, which comes off in small quantities at a time, is high coloured, of a thicker consistence than natural, & sometimes containing a large proportion of small calcareous particles; but it has frequently mixed with it, a great deal of blood.

Sometimes he discharges pure blood, sometimes it is in a [clotted] state, & then it passes with difficulty through the urethra, producing extreme pain. He also has at times blood mixed with his stools

He complains of acute pain in the region of both kidneys, striking down to the thigh, along the course of the ureters but particularly severe along the urethra. He is troubled with flatulence & often with headache, & he is much debilitated by his complaints.

Pulse 70 & feeble. Appetite impaired. Tongue rather foul. Thirst great. Belly very costive.

He first observed the Haematuria, about four months ago.

But the pains, did not occur, till about two months after. The discharge of blood, with his faeces came on soon after the former. It is now much less considerable than before. He imputes his complaints to long continued fatigue, & overexertion. None of his relations are subject to nephritic complaints. He has used some powders of Gum Arabicum & nitre, with some temporary relief.

But the pain of his back continues nearly as severe as before. He has not of late discharged any pure blood by the urethra but his urine is still deeply tinged.

Belly rather bound. But he has taken twice a small quantity of Glaubers salt which operated freely.

March 4 Had considerable sickness from the increased dose of the Uva Ursi but without vomiting. The pain of his back has been very distressing to him since the last report & he has discharged a considerable quantity of clotted blood with his urine. Since he began the Cream of Tartar his belly has been kept regular.
