    Betty Lindsay

    1785

    No14. November 25. 1785

Betty Lindsay at 29 a married woman is affected with flying pains through her body, but particularly in her head, left arm & right leg

These pains are much increased by warmth in bed, & are not relieved by sweating to which she is sometimes subjected in the night. The tone & muscular power of the affected arm are much diminished, & those of the leg in some degree impaired.

She does not think that the joints of either extremity are particularly affected. The pain of her head is usually worst in the morning, & is then accompanied with considerable vertigo.

Pulse natural, Tongue clean, appetite impaired, Great thirst, especially in the morning. Belly & menses regular. Bad sleep.

These complaints began to distress her about two years ago at which time, after exposure to cold when in the puerperal state, she was attacked with a very severe pain of head which soon became somewhat easier & then the other symptoms appeared. But the pains were much more violent than they are at present. Was formerly healthy. Has used no medicines lately.

December. 3. Has taken the pills regularly which have had no obvious operation. Her pains still continue to be very severe, particularly when she becomes warm in bed, which deprives her of rest during the night

But she thinks her health is in other respects somewhat mended.
