    John Henderson

    1785

    No13th November 20th 1785

John Henderson at 29 of a stout habit of body & healthy appearance

His whole head, his arms & the trunk of his body are covered with a copious eruption, the pustules of which are quite distinct & in some places at a considerable distance from each other.

Some of them have a red appearance others are covered with a thick whitish incrustation & in general they are about the 6th of an inch in diameter. This eruption is not attended with any pain or itchiness. But he has severe shooting pains in the crown of his head & top of his shoulder & has great weakness & pain in his eyes, which are without any marks of inflammation or evident disease. Pulse. Tongue & appetite natural. Belly costive

These complaints commenced about three weeks ago. The coming out of the eruption was not preceded or attended by any particular symptoms. The affection of the eyes began about four days ago, since which time the headache has been easier. he knows no cause whatever for these complaints. He formerly enjoyed good health & none of his relations are subject to such diseases.

He has used no medicines excepting an [oily] application to his shoulders to relieve the pain.
