    Jean McCall

    (1785-1786)

    No24th Jean McCall at 35.

Case in some respects a doubtful one.

When came under our care most urgent symptom also affection of alimentary canal.

Particularly a severe & distressing Diarrhoea

But grounds to fear that this as well as other symptoms were consequence [illegible] of pneumonia affection.

And some reason for suspecting that liable to Phthisis as indicated by pain of breast cough & quickness of pulse

And this somewhat corroborated by two other particulars, absence of menses, & night sweats.

For reason to fear that these as well as Diarrhoea are of Colliquative kind.

If this the case prospects of recovery cannot be very great.

From affect however already observed from employment continued use neither necessary nor proper.

For which has had affect of [discouraging] looseness has augmented thirst

While from employment cannot have any tendency to radical cure

On supposition of Tuberculous Phthisis here propose course of Cicuta with Peruvian Bark

For although temporary removal of diarrhoea or other urgent symptoms yet will soon again return.

Practice however may be employed at least for immediate relief.

And if pneumonia affection merely catarrh may hope that most distressing particularly diarrhoea soon entirely overcome.

With view to this have directed an Emetic & Thebaic Pills.

And from occasional employment of opiates & astringents may hope for mitigation if not entire removal.

But if these have not soon good affect & if suspicion of Phthisis continues have thoughts of trying Cicuta perhaps conjoined with Peruvian Bark.

But if that case too much reason to apprehend that all trials will be in vain.
