James Goodall
(1785-1786)
No22. James Goodall at 56 subjected to complication of affections.
But principal & most distressing complaint severe & obstinate diarrhoea. With which, although at times considerable remission, has now been affected, for more than thirty years Hence therefore hopes of complete recovery cannot be very sanguine. And even perhaps somewhat doubtful whether would be safe or proper. For after habit so long accustomed to such a discharge, although morbid worst consequences will often result from suppuration. Continuation however with great degree of violence still more to be dreaded. And indeed has already indeed such state of weakness that not without apprehensions. But by aid of proper remedies, reason I think to hope that may soon be able to alleviate affection. For notwithstanding long continuation of affection no reason to believe, that has given rise to any local affection of intestinal [lab.] Have begun practice by directing for this patient an Emetic. And to this shall probably [subjoin] the use of some astringent. Would not however here wish to employ what may immediately restore looseness And have thoughts of using the Tincture e Kino combined with vinum infusion of Rhubarb. From which hope, that intestines may be [braced] & discharge restored while at same time belly kept moderately open.
