Isabel Renton
1785
New cases December 2d 1785.
Remarks December 10th. 17. Case of Isabel Renton a woman in 46 year, affords example of a disease very frequent at this season of year. What I think most properly distinguished by title of chronic catarrh. And which although in general considered as not alarming, yet in end not unfrequently fatal. In present situation of this patient [however] no appearance which at now at least can be considered as dangerous. And reason to hope although disease should continue during course of winter will as formerly have relief on return of warm weather. But before this period may expect to relieve patient by proper remedies. Particularly by those, which unload breast, or give determination from lungs to other parts. As such began practice you will observe by directing a vomit. And this probably shall occasionally repeat when from circumstances of dyspnoea & difficult expiration reason to think that large accumulation of viscid mucus. But here chiefly attempted cure by endeavouring to prevent this from giving increased discharge by kidney. And as diuretic here, am employing the Vinum Nicotiana. From which although I own no very extensive experience of use, have yet I think seen best affects in some cases. And from general good affects of diuretics in cases of chronic catarrh am disposed to hope that may here prove very serviceable.
