John Young
(1785-1786)
John Young has been now for a considerable time a Dispensary patient.
And am sorry to say without hitherto deriving much benefit from practices employed. Have selected case as subject of practice & lecture here as exhibits an affection not at least frequently to be met with. To his disease, following system of Mr Sauvages, & other nosologists1, as chiefly marked by bleeding from gums, might give name of [ Stomacce]. But here question of chief [importance], whether to consider haemorrhage, as depending on local affection of Gums themselves, or on condition of general mass of fluids. This question, shall afterwards have occasion to consider, when treat of case at more length. May only observe that is chiefly on idea of general affection of fluids, that have at present put this patient, on use of Peruvian Bark, & diluted Vitriolic acid With which however if be not soon product of good effect is intention to conjoin some [remedy] intended to act on gums themselves
Explanatory notes:1) Nosology is the branch of medical science dealing with the classification of diseases. Individuals referred to in the case notes as nosologists were commonly those who had published nosological, or classificatory, medical texts.
