    James Lundie

    1784

    No27. January 30th 1784

James Lundie at 37. Has a very violent & almost constant cough. He seldom expectorates anything but when he does it gives him a short respite from the cough He has also the sensation of a tight girt1 about the breadth of a persons hand extending from one breast to the other & he perceives a prickling sensation in the various parts of this imaginary girt. The pains are most violent before the cough & are hardly felt when it is present, but return again as soon as it ceases. Formerly the cough was more frequent & severe & then the pain was not so violent. Pulse about 80 of middling strength, belly bound. Appetite pretty good. But on the first violent fit of coughing after he takes food he discharges the contents of his stomach.

He has had this complaint for twelve weeks. It began with a pain in his back & head. When he went to bed he fell into a very profuse sweat, which continued during the whole of the night.

He remained in bed all the next day & the day but one following he returned to work & then he perceived the cough. In about five weeks after this the pain began in his breast & has [continued] ever since
