    DEP/DUA/1/31/45 (Normalised version)

    William Gray

    (1782-1783)

    William Gray.

Case of this patient consisted entirely of pectoral complaint.

And at first somewhat doubtful whether to be considered as of Catarrh or Phthisis kind.

Was however, upon whole, rather disposed to adopt former opinion.

And favourable termination of case has since I think shown that in this not mistaken.

On supposition of Catarrh, began with use of Emetic.

From this had in view, both to empty stomach, & unload breast.

At same time however, directed also an electuary of Cream of Tartar & [Flores] of Sulphur.

A composition from which in Catarrhal cases, have often seen great benefit derived

And these good effects, I [apprehend] readily explained from influence both as cathartic, & diuretic.

In operation, in these ways, were not disappointed.

And probably in consequence of that, very considerable mitigation of affection soon obtained.

Still however continued in some degree, to be at times affected with severe cough.

This, inclined to attribute, to mucus acquiring state, in which could not readily be expectorated.

With view therefore to promoting more free expectoration had recourse to Squill Pills.

And from these, mitigation of this symptom seemed soon to be obtained.

Accordingly in no long time, dismissed free from all his symptoms.
