Affection somewhat singular. Chiefly under form of eruption [illegible] of small phlegmons These however entirely confined to one hand. And these seemed to be the effect of past accident Small splinter of wood viz having been accidentally run into hand. How far supposition of patient in this respect strictly well founded will not pretend to say. At same time, from commencement & course of affection, at least highly probable. But must also acknowledge, that have never in former practice met with any similar instance. Here supposing splinter of wood to have been origin of whole was [inclined] to [refer] pustules to matter found at [part] being [absorbed] And from retention at particular parts giving rise to phlegm, under which form the disease appeared. On this view imagined that cure to be effected by diminishing increased action at part, & inflamed diathesis in habit in general. With first of these intentions, had recourse to Unguent Saturn. With last, to composite powder of Jalap which from proportion of Cream of Tartar which contains may be ranked among refrigerant purgatives. In operation of both these remedies, appeared at least not disappointed. For while purgative operated briskly, by means of ointment, sores seemed to obtain disposition to heal And whether from [remedy] or not in short time dismissed free from affection
