    DEP/DUA/1/31/42 (Normalised version)

    Isabel McAndrew

    (1782-1783)

    Isabel McAndrew.

Case consists of but few symptoms

    Almost sole affection severe headache

And that so limited to particular side that might with propriety obtain name of Hemicrania

But without giving names to particular modifications would consider it, merely under title of Cephalgia, still of more consequence to determine nature.

And here three suppositions might be entertained.

Whether viz a nervous headache, whether consequence of affection of stomach, or whether of Rheumatic kind.

When treatment first begun inclined rather to former of these suppositions.

And by this lead to employment of Valerian & of Opium

Finding however that with these constipation induced, was necessary to keep belly gently open.

With this intention had recourse to Elixir of Aloes & Rhubarb or Sacred elixir as commonly called.

To this especially led as from use expected also benefit as stomachicus.

For of numerous tribe of stomachicus few upon whole product of greater advantage

But neither from this, was intention answered, nor from other medicine, was headache alleviated.

While therefore with view of opening belly, had recourse to aloetic pills, on supposition of rheumatic affection, employed against headache blister & issue

And to these in no long time, affection yielded so that at last dismissed free from complaint
