    George Rob

    1782

    December 20th 1782. XXIV

George Rob. at 19 a Shoemaker about fifteen months ago when at work felt something gradually ascending from the right toe up to the leg thigh & side, till it arose to the head, when his features became considerably [distorted], & he was insensible for about a second.

This aura has frequently recurred generally beginning on the right side but sometimes taking a similar course on the left. He is always a little confused for some time after the fit. He complains once in one or two months of very painful contractions of his fingers & toes, which require considerable force to bend them. These complaints are always worse in the winter than in Summer & worse when confined to the house than after exercise in the open air. He feels at times a prickly sensation over his whole body after the contractions are gone. Pulse 80 appetite good. Belly natural. Sleep unimpaired unless when the contractions come on. He has taken some pills without any benefit

Cap. Pil. Caerul. i. om. m. & vesp.

    Infirmary Case

    George Rob. at 19. Shoemaker

February 1. 1783. For a month past has complained of frequent contractions of his legs & arms so severe that he can scarcely stretch them out which exertion however he is obliged to perform as the only means of obtaining relief. The fits are of uncertain duration, recur 7 or 8 times in 24 hours & are attended with Dyspnoea & cold sweats. The muscles of the legs feel peculiarly tense. Both his hands are swelled but the right is most painful. He is frequently awaked from sleep by sudden starts & his legs swell towards night. Pulse natural. Appetite good Belly regular. About 18 months since he laboured under the same complaints & experienced no relief till summer commenced.
