    DEP/DUA/1/29/42 (Normalised version)

    Robert Cuningham

    (1782)

    Robert Cuningham.

In case of this child distinctly marked instance of Rachitis.

This sufficiently evinced not merely in having lost power of walking but in obvious affection of bones, both of inferior & superior extremities.

And besides other symptoms are probably to this also to refer, short tickling cough.

For among other evident affections there also occurs distortion of chest.

And this well known to give irritating, suppurating cough.

Which here the rather probable as cough without expectoration.

Taking this to be the disease prognosis cannot be favourable.

Not indeed that disease often suddenly fatally terminates.

Or although such an event sometimes takes place, that here any symptoms indicate.

But for most part, after occurring, progression not easily checked.

And after distortions have once taken place, very rarely indeed, that bones regain former figuration.

Upon whole then expectations that shall be of service to this patient, not very great.

Yet while continues to attend us some trials at least may be made.

And for this purpose have begun a course of chalybeate, conjoined with an absorbent powder.

From this have in view the restoration of tone to system & destruction of acid in stomach a means tending to weaken it.

That may have proper trial must be persisted in for some length of time. If fails sea bathing
