William Stark
(1781-1782)
William Stark at 64. January 9th
Has for about an year past been much troubled with pains shooting through his lower extremities, but particularly affecting the ankles, knees & groins & frequently with great severity attacking the small of his back in so much that it is not without great difficulty & pain that he is able to rise up when sitting. When these complaints first began the weather was very cold & his ankles were much swelled; but on the appearance of the summer season the swelling subsided; & the pains became much easier. Since this winter began however his complaints are again aggravated & a fall which he got about a month ago has contributed a great deal to their aggravation. The pain of his back is much easier when he lies in bed & all his pains are relieved by warmth, which he finds necessary to keep up by external means as his lower joints have a constant tendency to become cold. In other respects in health & he was never subject to urinary complaints. He has used no medicines Habeat. Lin. Volat. unc. duas illinatur pauxillum partibus apprim dolent. om. m. & v. nec. non Rx. He does not however observe that it moves his belly. Cont. Med. u. a. February 2d The elixir has occasioned considerable looseness & his pains are nothing alleviated from the volatile liniment. Interm. Med. & Rx. Pulv. Fol. Rhodod. gr iii. Pulv. Cretac. scrup.Mcap dos. om. m. & vesp. 9. Took the Rhododendron as directed which occasioned no uneasiness at stomach or other sensible operation But after the use of it he had a sense of heat over his whole body which was particularly observable in his ankles where the pain was most severe. The pains of his limbs are now much easier. But he still complains of that of his back. Cont. Pulv. Rhodod. u. a. 16 The pains still continue much easier But he has still great weakness in the parts formerly affected.
