When given with view to latter of these was found very serviceable against former.
This led to its being tried [intentionally] in two other cases. And in these also was found product of good affect. From such experience joined to former sentiments shall I own be disposed to give it fair & even frequent trial. For although not suited to all cases may yet succeed in some. And that too although in other instances should evidently be product of bad affects. Here then mean to give it as fair trial, as circumstances of case will admit of. And that may be better able to judge of real affect, unless from [urgent] symptoms, shall wish to employ it alone. And if no inconvenience from small dose, mean soon to give it to extent of ℥i or ii in course of day During this course however may be obliged occasionally to employ emetics or blisters with view to mitigation of symptoms But if in end ineffective have next in view the use of a diuretic medicine with this patient. With that intention shall have recourse to dulcified spirit of nitre. If employed shall afterwards explain to you at more length my intentions in such trial. But at present unnecessary to enter upon it. Any may conclude with observing that if this also ineffective shall then have recourse to those practices in most common use, issues, squills, Gum Ammoniacum or the like. Today at one o’clock at Public Dispensary shall begin weekly reports with few patients already selected as subject of practice & lecture
