Elizabeth Aikman
(1780-1781)
Elizabeth Aikman, One of many instances in which during present course have employed Vitriol Acid as a remedy for cutaneous affections.
In several other cases have used it I think both externally & internally with very great success. In present instance use has also I think been attended with manifest & considerable advantage. Here however had to combat an [obstinate] instance of Lepra. And that too very generally extending over whole body. Hence if even found to yield to this medicine could not be expected that would be soon removed. And that too although used both internally & externally. While use regularly continued had opportunity of [marking] in the disease although slow yet gradual decline. On intermission however of internal use for space even of single week some fresh eruptions appeared. Will not positively affirm that this might not be accidental At same time rather inclined to consider it as evidence of influence of medicine. On this course then, since began which disease has very much changed appearance for better, patient still continues And hope that may afford us as suggested when formerly spoke of case striking example of efficacy of medicine. After this patient ten others in list of whose cases already spoken. But either dismissed from attendance before last subject of lecture or so lately treated of that nothing farther need now be added. With these remarks then conclude case lectures for winter session.
