David Bonthron
(1777-1778)
Case of David [Bonthron] last I shall mention has I must own disappointed expectations.
And indeed has disappointed prognosis which here delivered. Consider case as example of syphilis which indeed before came under our care manifestly appeared to be of obstinate nature And as previous to application to us had under direction of other practitioners used mercury to great extent judged it advisable to attempt cure by other means. With this view had recourse to medicines which have often before directed. These were roots of Mezereon & Sarsaparilla. But here ordered them in form different from what had ever before used viz in [Powder] Under this medicine complaint soon remarkably changed for better. And was in hopes when last spoke of case little more necessary to be done. Soon after complaint so far alleviated that gave up Mezereon & had recourse to Peruvian Bark with view of preventing return. Had hardly however begun this medicine or rather given up Mezereon with Sarsaparilla than apparent return of affection. And in short time rose again to such height that have omitted Bark & returned to use of former medicines. Under this symptoms once more considerably alleviated. But whether of itself sufficient for complete cure or not have now at least learnt that not to expect it without longer continuation. Besides these remarks on other cases But either less peculiar in mode of treatment or method of cure. Or but for short time under [care] had occasion to speak of them
