    Alexander Glasgow

    (1790)

    No33. Alexr Glasgow at 32.

In case of this patient as formerly obs. had a distinct markd inst of Rheum.

And since came under our care no circum has occurrd to lead me in any degree to alter opin with respt. to it.

Then viewd disease as in that cond which would term state of irritab.

And from all circum taken tog entert hopes that in no long time might be brought to fav termin.

In this must confess have not hitherto made all progr which expected.

But at the same time was at last report consid better than formerly

And this am inclind to think might at least with some probab. be attrib to med empl.

Began pract here by direct for patient, Pil. Theb. to extent of gr X every night at bed time.

And at same time ordered parts most paind to be carefully anon. every night at bed time with Ungt Tereb cum Opio.

From both these med here lookd for good effect.

Of influ of opium as allaying pain, when taken intern, need not say any thing.

And here, in Pil. Theb., empl to extent of gr. for dose.

Which with patient before [illegible ] to use hoped would have desired affec

But this affect not only results from intern, but also from extern use of Opium.

And have partic have in many former inst exper good effects from it when given under form here [direct.] that viz of Ungt. Tereb. cum Opio.

From both one & other however, expect here disapp.

For pains still contin to the full as severe as before.

While at same time compl also of very bound belly, a circum to which was inclind in part at least to attrib sever of pains.

This constip however had little doubt in attrib to pills.

And as these med without effect thought it better to omit them

With contin ointm therefore now subs to the Pills. comp powder of Guaiac consist of equal parts of that G. Resin. & Crem Tart united.

In this state is indeed a less activ med than in forms of simple or volat elix.

But more easily taken, & a cheaper med for Disp pract.

While at same time, much more solub. than when taken without Cream of Tart.

And in this state, has in gener some effect, both as moving belly, & prom diaphor.

Both these conseq. here evid resulted from empl.

And although not consid at first, yet has had under use grad mitig of pain.

In so much indeed, that whatever may be after state of disease, look upon this as ex of benef to be derivd from empl. in such inst of Rheumatism.
