    Susan Gowans

    (1790)

    No27. Susan Gowans, at 12.

In disease of this patient, as formerly obs. an evid ex of a cut affect, better entit to name of Lep. than any other.

In most respects simil to case of case of Ailison Wallace which had lately occas to consid.

And of the two might perhaps be consid as in app. the least fav.

At same time nothing which could be consid as urgent.

And was intent to try with this patient a diff. pract. that might have opport of contr. various modes of treatm in affect at least simil.

Had recourse you will obs. to an extern applic from which not much to be exp. viz Ungt Saturn.

This in place of stim power of Ungt Citrin, merely a mild and & gentle applic.

And if any other affect than that of mere unct matter, would be that of allaying action in superf. vessels.

For saturn med in general at least allowed to possess a sed powr

And here expected nothing farther than merely prom the remov of scales to which appl.

With view to cure had here recours to anoth med, of which hitherto but little expr. & which have not before tried in any cutan comp.

The solut viz of [Muriated] Barytes.

Of this med as introd in cure of Scroph by Dr Crawf of Lond. have already offered some obs.

And then remarkd that had found it not only success in these but also even in Cancer.

If this realy the case may I think presume, that has great influ both as changing state of action of vessels & as remov obst.

And on these grounds had reasn to hope that would be found useful in cut erupt.

Directed it therefore in distilld water to extent of [gt] V for dose.

At first without any obv. operat.

And this in gener case when taken even to larger dose.

During course of 2d week however whethr from state of stom, or some other accid circum. was sometimes followed by vomiting.

This howevr did not consid as any suff reason for discont use.

And the rather encour to persist as erupt somewhat mended.

Whether vomiting accid or not in no long time ceased to be conseq of med.

In so much that thought it even advis to encr dose a little.

And under augm dose has now persisted for sever weeks, without any inconv & with consid dimn of sympt.

Is therefore still [my] intent to persist in giving it fair & full trial.

Rather however in way of prop contin than by large dose at once.

For is also by contin & not by quant of many active med that disease to be erad.

This partic app. with respect to Antim Merc &e.

And same also may hold with respect to others even where dose not limited by viol of med.

What will ultim be effect of this med either in pres case or other of simil nature cannot pretend to say.

But may obs. that pres trial as far as has gone rather in fav of med than otherwise.
