    Mathew Steele

    (1789)

    No19. Mathew Steele at 47.

In case of this patient have I think, an inst of Dyspep or stom ail.

At same time must be allowed that not altogeth without pecul.

And partic is attended with more severe pain than usually occurs when no prop local disease of stom.

Here however, reason I think to believe that pain entirely the eff of inordin action.

For neither any evid of schiros on one hand, or of inflam on [indeed].

Indeed sympt which are we may say univ attend of these here wanting

And here, may I think with great prob. consider pain, as the mere effect of inord action induced by distens from flatul.

And this flatul. the conseq of weak tone of musc fibres of alim canal, by which unab. to resist [exha] of air.

This state of tone howevr often accomp. even with uncommon tend to action, or morb. irritab.

And although dyspep. may arise from many diff morb. condit of stom yet this perhaps most comm.

With this view of the disease are naturally led to [hope] fav of terminat.

And although at pres viol yet from short contin may even look for that in no long time.

Partic by avoiding causes tend to weaken tone, & by use of that regim both with respect to diet & exercise which encr. vigour of musc. fib. in general.

But in way of med also something may be done, both as tending to radic cure, to to allev of sympt.

Thus with view of strength stom & expelling flatul, have directed a mixture the basis of which arom & bitter tinct.

With view of allev pain & allaying tend to inordin action have had recourse to Opium under form Pil Theb.

And lastly to prevent & counteract costiveness have directed occas use of Pil. ex. Colocynth cum Aloe.

From these med am hopeful that in no long time consid benef may be obt.

And unless some reason occurs to lead me to alter plan, shall be disp. to give it a fair trial.

But of pres pract. as well as of those which may afterw be adopted reserve farther obs. till shall again treat of case in order of list.
