When formerly spoke of case of this patient expressd great doubts resp. it

And ackn. that could not with confid form any decid op. either as to name or nature.

Must now add that what have since seen of case has by no mean served to rem. this state of uncert.

At same time what has occured during treatm, has servd rather to conf. former conj than otherw.

That viz, both headach & dimin of vision from same cause.

And that rather to be referrd to some cause within brain, than to any morb. cond. of integ.

But that prob. rather affect of cond of nerv. power than of any cause giving fixed [compr].

On this footing, thought began treatm of this case by ordering for this pat. the use of Camph.

An artic which from action on nerves of stomach, has often very wonderf. effect on nerv. syst.

And not unfreq. prod of very great benef in what calld nerv head.

In these indeed can hardly perhaps be said to be a very comm pract.

But by some [much] & success. empl in such affect.

Was partic a fav. remedy with late Dr Hope.

And after first empl it on his recomm, have rep. had recourse to it in own pract with great benef.

In pres inst soon after use begun had at least, some relief of pain.

With this however no matter. change on state of vision

As means therefore of restoring sensib of optic nerve, had recourse to one of most powerf & penet [stim] yet discov. viz electr.

This, as [safest] & most [effect] mode of here empl. directed under form of [sparks].

And although at first no remark [infl.] yet in no long time had some relief of affect.

During empl. howevr of these med pat compl. of anoth [action]

    viz severe pain of back.

From this directed friction of paind part, with Ungt. Tereb cum Opio.

An artic which has for active [been] the Ol. Tereb. diffused in Hogs lard & comb with a prop. of opium

And which have often directed with success in allev of pains.

Accord on acct of cheapness freq. in Disp pract give it pref to Anod. Bals.

Under these med cannot say that compl of pat. are as yet by any means rem.

But so far diminishd as to give ground to hope for recov from contin
