    William Stuart

    (1789)

    Wm Stuart at 30th. No30

When formerly spoke of case of this patient, obs. that at loss to say what name with prop to be given.

Evid however consisted chiefly in dimin of musc. action.

And although not prop. corresp. to defin of Paralysis, yet to be consid at least as a paralyt affect.

Here as indeed is not unfreq. case disease was conseq of fever.

For this while [causes] some, well known to induce other affect of that kind.

And indeed a matter of doubt whether most freq obs. influ in one way or other.

In general howevr paralyt affect result from fever not obstin.

For every commonly not effect of any fixd cause, giving compress. nor even of Torp in nerv energy, but merely of pecul weak state in musc. fibres themselves.

Hence do not more less require tonics than med of nerv. kind

This accord led me to direct for pres. patient a powd consist of Valer & Peruv bark.

And to these the rather led as imag. that might here also be useful as allev pains.

For these consid as being effect of depraved sensib.

This powdr howevr were informd did not agree with patients stom.

For after every dose affected not only with sickness at stom but with vomit.

While this the case however could not reason expect any benef from use.

And at same time prod of not a little distress.

This then naturally led us to omit use

And had recourse to anoth med, which as acting on nerv syst has unquest very powerful effects.

    viz Camphor.

Impress. which this gives to nerves to which appl. unquest. very powerful & very pecul.

And by this means from influence commun to brain affects whole nerv syst.

Is thus at least that [should] expl. benef. which have obs. derivd from it in diff. nerv. affect.

And in some even obst inst of Paralysis have I think seen great benf

From this med, patient had none at least of those inconv result from former.

And while excited no vomiting or or other uneas at stom thought the trem of his hands somewhat dimin

From this therfore entert hopes that by due contin good effects might be obt.

And although could not look for unif yet expected grad recov.

But as patient in short time gave up attend no opport afforded of giving it fair trial.
