In disease of this patient as form obs. have a distin markd inst of a paraly. affect. And as then suspected likely to turn out obstin. At same time not without hopes of being at least so far able to bring about recov. That is to restore, strength & power of volunt motion, at least to more perf. state than when came under care. For although disease of this pat of consid stand, yet can neither be consid as past period of natur or artif cure. And in both ways no doubt that recov sometimes takes place. In former way, is cheifly effect either of spont evac, or stim. And these accord, as it were indic for artif remed. In adv. periods of affect however very little to be expect from evac. tend to [remove] [compr]. And if cure to be accompl. is by stim encr. excit of nerv power. These may be empl. either topic as acting on part partic affected. Or generally, as acting upon syst at large. And here will obs. have had [illegible] to them in both ways. Began by direct first on paindpart, & weakend parts with Volat Linim – or Linim Ammon of Lond Coll. At least although not in same proport. a mixt of Camph. oil with volat alk spirit. This need hardly obs a powerful stim to sensib parts to which appl. And indeed not only oper as [illegible] but often even as excit prop. blist. Infl. of this stim not only exerted on nerves to which app. but if these not altog. insensib comm even to [Sens]. And thus exerts influ on that part of brain from which deriv orig. With this extern applic howevr, comb. also use of Camph intern. An artic which from impress it exerts, on nerves of stom, has very powerf influ, on nerv syst. in gener. And in some former inst of paral. have I think used it with great benef. But after cont these med for some weeks, progr to cure at utmost but inconsid. From this therefore led to conj. with them, the use of electr. An agent which need hardly obs. perhaps more effect in remov obstin paralys, than any other with which yet acq. [Hence] directed it under form of sparks from affect side. As from this mode of admin, more I appreh in such cases to be lookd for than eithr from [shock] on one hand or insul on other. Under these med, [notw] unfav weather, pat has evid [mad] some progr to recov. A circum encour to cont. But at same time is only be long contin course that in such case any matter benef to be exp.
