    Isabel Dewar

    (1788)

    No16. Isabel Dewar at 36.

When formerly spoke of case of this patient, obs. that consid it as in som degree both of doubtful & compl. nat.

While however evid subj both to stomach & pect ailm. consid latter as by much most import. part of affect

And with regard to pect compl. was very appreh that should find it termin in Phthis.

Patient however did not remain so long under care, as to enab us to judge more accur of nature of affect.

And with regard to this case as well as former very little to add with resp to pract.

For whethr from aggrav of affect or any other cause in short time deser attendance

Began by prescrib for this patient a gentle mucil mixt with a prop of vitriol acid.

To this chiefly led with view to cough & sweating.

By mucil expected that irritat at fauces might be dimin.

And vitriol acid, prob in conseq of [astring] power, one of most powerful means of checking sweats, of colliq kind.

Besides this, expected also, that might be of some use, as bracing stom

For in this way no doubt that powers very consid.

And accord, while vegetab. accids, or even artic affording these, give great uneas to dysp. pat. often very great benef from min, partic vitriol.

Would app. that this artic, so far at least, answ. expect.

For after use sweating obs to be less consid than before.

In other respects however cannot say that any allev of affect.

For while cough contin severe, much affected with loss of strength.

Which comb. with small & quick pulse, gave addit appreh of Phthis.

In this situat with contin of form med, directed mixt of Peruv Bark & Cicuta.

A combin from which have been inclind to think, that in some inst of Phthis, have seen benef.

And imag. that might tend still farthr, both to restrain sweating & restore tone of stom.

But although med born without inconv yet prod of no benef.

For under use, as found at succeed report, sweatings became even more prof than before.

Still however hoped expected that by prop. contin more effect might be obt.

And in hopes of allev cough by unloading breast directed an Emet.

Since these med prescr. however, have seen nothing more of pat.

And although cannot speak with certain, yet I own am inclind to conject, that from progr of Phthis, has been unable to attend us any longer
