    James Short

    (1787-1788)

    No34. James Short. at 9.

Case of this patient formerly repres as somewhat doubtful.

Had indeed evid mark of Haematur or disch of bloody urine.

And presumpt from seat of pain that this bloody disch from kidney.

But diffic to say from what cause these proceeded.

To suppos of Calcul. most comm cause many circum occurd as obj.

And was inclind rather to consid it as depend on some other morb. affect of kidney.

But what ever suppos adopted could entert no hopes of speedy recov.

While patient indeed cont. undr our care sympt in some respects easier.

But at same time can not repres him as having obt. any mattr adv. from pract empl.

Began by direct for him use of Crem of Tart. conj with prop of Cassia.

This hoped might operat as gentle laxat & refrig.

And as far as haemorrh. any thing of active kind have tend to dimin.

Exp. however still more from it in conseq of action as gentle diuret.

As thus sand, or other irrit matter, carried off from kidney.

And from free disch less fulness of vessels, giving dispos to rupt.

From Cream of Tart, no effect in opening belly.

Nor could it be said that prom urin disch

Secret. indeed for some time clear.

But this what might readily have conceivd to happ. without any influ of Cream of Tart.

And that had no great affect, app. from being still subj to severe pain.

Hoped howevr, that by contin influ might be encr.

    But in this much disapp.

For very soon after had much more severe attack of pain, than before.

And This succeded by very consid haemor.

And that too almost under form of pure blood.

Or at least told that so little dilut with urine as to be coag. in short time on expos. to air.

And this as usually the case followed by consid [tempor] ease.

In this situat with contin of Cream of Tart. directed use of powders of Uv. Ursi to extent of Ji twice a day.

This artic not many years ago introd as a remed in cal. cases.

And at one time even supp to operate as solv.

After howevr this opin entirely [disca] yet still found an useful remed in cal. cases.

And empl. also with advant. in many other affect of urin organs.

That found gener. useful may be inferd from holding place, in alm every mod pharm

And have not unfreq I think seen it of adv in [other] cases of [urin] Haem.

Hence therefore thought that des [trial] And for space of week at least under its empl. cont. toler. easy

An evid proof that could not be consid as disagr. with him.

But since that have seen nothin farther of him at this place.

And can therefore say nothing fath respect him.

If however attend discont from [being] [easy] can hardly be attrib. to Uv. Ursi

For in all prob. med. discont. but little empl.
