    Christian Murray

    (1787-1788)

    Christ Murray at 40 No33.

When formerly spoke of case of this pat. obs. that consid here as subj to compl. of affect.

Was in some degree affected both with catarh & dyspept. sympt.

But these seemd less consid & less import. than sympt either of catarhal Rheum or of Febrile kind.

Febrile app. seemd to put on much form of interm of quot. type.

Imag. however that this modif of fever might be merely concom of Rheum.

And accord thought it first advis to direct meas to that affect.

With this intent had recourse to Guaiac under form of comp powd

That is comb with equal quant of Crem of Tart.

An artic by which solut in stom readily affected.

And accord in this state while little less active, much less expens than volat. tinct.

To this the rathr led as thought might allev. cough.

For this often conseq of determin eithr to intest canal or to surface.

Operat in pres inst was in first of these ways.

But while with this other sympt rather easier, no mitig of pain.

And was partic severe in back. On this acct directed first with Ungt Tereb cum Opio, an artic of which have already oftener than once had occas to speak

And from which have I think in many inst seen good effects

Here however cannot say that this was case

For after use for week, pain cont. as severe as before

And at same time daily returns of cold fits gave now stronger susp of interm.

Began therfore to susp. that in place of pains being conseq cause of fever they were conseq. of it.

Determin therefore on having [recor] to Bark after prev use of an Emet.

In operat of Emet not disapp.

And after use of Bark to extent of ounce became free from returns of cold fit.

While at same time pains [consi] easier.

A circum tending at least to strengh suppos. now adopted.

Hoped therefore that affect might now be overcome.

But as compl of uneas at stom. seemd advis to do something to strength tone & to contin adv. obt from bark.

Had recourse therfore to mixt of arom Tinct & Pepp. mint water.

And under this cont. for some time tolerab. [easy].

But from some accid, prob. expos to cold had return of pains.

And these now more than before marked of Rheum kind.

For prin seated in shoulders. In this situat had again recourse to ointment formerly used.

And at first at least seemd prod of good effect.

But upon accid aggrav. found it necss to have recourse to an opiate internally.

Partic with view to obt rest during night.

    This prod of desird effect

And in that time, patient so well that reckond farthr attend unnecss
