    No31. Janr 26th 1788

    Donald Mathieson at 34 is frequently affected with general flying pains through his whole body

    They take their rise from the upper part of the ribs of the right side from thence they proceed to the middle of the back & extend to the lower extremities. He has likewise slight distension of stomach attendd with some nausea, vomiting & cardialgia, with borborygmi & much discharge of wind which is greatly aggravated by eating vegetables. His appetite is more voracious than natural. He complains also at times of a burning heat in the situation of the right mamma which is always most distressing when his stomach is full. But he says it is immediately removed by vomiting any thing from his stomach. He has likewise slight sore throat attended with cough & viscid mucus expectoration. His cough has sometimes been accompanied with spitting of blood, but that has not occurred lately.

    Pulse 120 Belly natural, some thirst, Appetite much impaird.

    These symptoms began about twelve months ago & he ascribes them to the action of sea air & hunger

    He has used various remedies from some of which he thinks he derived benefit.

    Cap. om. m. Pil. Foetid cum Aloe gr V nec non Rx. Tinct. Absyn ℥ ii. Tinct. Aromat ℥i. Ag. Fontan ℥iii M cap. ℥p. ter de die

    Febr 2.

    Has been much less affected with uneasiness from wind in his bowels since the use of the medicines.

    But he is much distressd with cough from which he has expectorated what appeard to be purulent matter with a mixture of blood.

    Pulse 130. Interm. Med & cap Pulv. G. Myrrh. comp. coch parv ter in die

    Cough somewhat easier, & he has expectorated freely during the week sometimes discharging a black grumous matter. Belly regular Pulse 130. Tongue clean, particularly at the point, & he is frequently affected with the sense of coldness in his back.

    Cont. Pulv. G Myrrh. u. a.

    Let him use daily, motion in a swing, for the space of an hour.

    His cough has been rather somewhat easier, but he has been much affected with uneasiness in his bowels & frequent vomiting of a watery fluid

    He has seen no more bloody expectoration but thinks he has [expect] up some purulent matter. Belly regular. Pulse 140. He has not yet had any opportunity of using the swing.
