    DEP/DUA/1/43/37 (Transcript version)

    Thomas Rowlie

    (1787-1788)

    No30. Thos Rowlie at 45

When this patient came first under care repres. him as subj to compl. of affect.

And with regard to some of these very much at loss.

What then however consid as most alarm & import has at least turnd out not most obst.

For while affect of abdom, whethr as formerly conj of Rheum kind or not now entirely gone, that of neck still cont.

And from what have seen reason I think to fear that will not soon yeild

Must however be confessd that to this pract much less directd than to affect of abdom.

And even with regard to that, as a good deal in dark, did but little.

Began by directing extern frict with camph oil, & intern use of Crem. Tart.

From first expectd some influ as dimn pain & tumour.

From last exp. restor of urin secret to natural quant.

And whether effect of oil or not at second report both pain & swelling dimin

On urine however no change. Prob the conseq of Crem of Tart induc two or three loose stools daily.

And hoped that as influ in this way dimin, diur would be encr

A conseq. very commonly resul from contin.

This however did not find to be case And although tumour of belly dimin yet as urine still scanty, subst. to Crem of Tart the vinous infus of Tobacco.

From this some effect in way of diures obt.

But occas. such sickness that own led to interm use, & to subs. another diuret. squills.

While from uneasiness of neck [decid] that this also as well as abd. should be rubd with oil.

Under use of these med urine in short time returned to natur stand, & affect of abdom entirely disapp.

Neck however gave even more uneasiness than before.

And had much changd app. Where formerly ichor disch, scaly erupt & slight ulcerat, had now [smoth] [slimy] surface but with uncom degree of hardn in parts below & much pain

To camph oil therfore directed that a proport of Theb Tinct should be conj.  Now however while urine to full extent in place of former loosness belly rather bound.

And at same time affected with disag. itchy sensat over surface.

From this led to use of compl. powder of Crem of Tart.

And hope that may at least be able to remove some of these sympt.

But am affraid cannot soon expect either from this or oil, that affect of neck compl. removed.

If shall cont. obst. may try Cicut Hyos. or Elect.

And although should in some degree contin. yet hope at least that may soon be brought to state in which not prod of great uneas.
