    Thomas Rowlie

    1788

    No30. Janr 26th 1788.

Thos Rowlie at 45, has a large colourless swelling, which extends from the cartilago ensiformis to the bottom of the pubis. It gives him the sensation of great tightness the [parts] feeling as if drawn together. He has also a scaly eruption on both sides of the neck from which there is frequently a discharge of ichorous matter, & when the scales are thrown off the [parts] below appear slightly ulcerated. The uneasiness arising from this prevents the free motion of his head & hinders him from raising his arm to his head.

Pulse about 90 & weak. Belly natural. Appetite good Urine high coloured but voided with the usual ease. The swelling began three weeks ago at the pubis with acute pain & it continued to encrease in size till the eighth day. Since that there has been no visible change upon it, but he thinks that it is somewhat softer. He attributes it to a severe stress which he receivd in carrying a heavy burthen & it occurred during the ensuing night

He has used some medicine, among others friction with oil from which he thinks he received some relief.
