    James Galloway

    1788

    No24 Janr 1st 1788

James Galloway at 35. has on different parts of his body, but especially on his breast a number of small spots, from one tenth to two tenths of an inch in diameter. These spots are in no degree raisd above the surface of the skin, which to the feel is of the natural smoothness. Some of them are of a florid red others of a livid others of a black colour. At different parts of his body blotches of a larger size are to be seen, from the size of half a crown to that of a crown piece & of a bluish colour. These after being visible for a few days often disappear & again return of nearly the same size, either at the same parts or at different parts of his body. From none of these vibices or petechiae has he any pain, itchy sensation or other feeling. And he is only sensible of their existence by seeing them. He is also at times affected with a considerable discharge of blood taking place spontaneously from his Ears Eyes, Nose, Mouth or Urethra. And if any part of his body be accidentally prickd, their immediately issues out an inconceivable quantity of blood; it being very difficult to restrain the haemorrhage occasioned even by the slightest wound of the skin. He complains also also of severe cough with the expectoration of viscid mucus & not infrequently he expectorates blood.

Pulse about 100, low & irregular, Belly natural, much thirst, Appetite impaird, Countenance pale & languid.

These symptoms first took place about twelve weeks ago. They came on suddenly and withou any obvious cause. And he says that in former periods of his life he has already been twice affected in the same manner.

Since his present complaint began he has used mixtures with the [the] Vitriolic acid, & the Peruvian bark under the form of powder, with some advantages. For at one time he was so much affected as to be unable to come abroad, but he can now walk about although not without difficulty.
