    Ann McLean

    (1787-1788)

    No22 Ann McLean at 36

Formerly pron disease of this patient an ex of Hyster.

And while cont. under our care no reason to alter opin eithr of nature of disease, or of conj. formd as to termin.

After so long stand, did not expect to be able to eradic affect.

And imag. that endeav. chiefly to be directed towards obv. urg. symp.

Cannot however say that even in this way had much influ.

Or at least relief obt. more of tempor. than perman nature.

But at same time, as will app. from more partic view had not only no [bad] effect but attended with some benefit.

Of all sympts here occurring [those] most distress to pat. were affect of alim canal.

Was partic with view to these that had here recourse to mixt with bitter & aromat. Tinct.

An artic of which have already oftener than once had occas to state opin.

And which am disp. to considr as very useful stom.

Partic in cases of flatul & indigest.

For while from immed action has effect of expelling wind & prom digest has also at same time in after effects a tend to strengthen tone.

Accord from time that began use thought sympt somewhat allev

Did not however seem to be fully suffic for disch of flatul.

And at same time contin to be freq. affected with glob. hyst.

From this therefore seemd necss. to do something farther, with view of obv. inord action.

And with this intent had recour to Assafoetid.

Here however as no occas to obv. costiv empl. it under form of Pil. Foetid simp.

That is equal parts of Assaf & Soap.

While latter of these artic used only to give prop. form the formr one of most powerful of the Antisp.

And partic as tending to allay inord actions of alim canal.

Accord little doubt in attrib it to this that Glob. hyster had become much less freq.

Now therefore patient upon the whole consid easier.

And was inclind to hope that by persist in use this relief might be contin.

Merely directed therefore that should persist in same course

But at succeeding report found that relief not so perman as could be wishd.

For notwith contin, now compls. of being much affected with swelling at stom partic occurring early in morning.

This however consid as affect of opport for accum of wind [ocur] during night.

And as also in some degree proceeding from influ of med hav ceased.

Imag. however that might be counteracted, by tone of stomach, in conseq of persist in med, acquiring greater vigour

And therefore with contin of formr pract directed only, as means of counteract it, the occas use of Pepp. mint water

But since that time, have seen nothing more of pat.

And of situat since cannot pretend to form any conject.

At same time do not think it very prob, that either with view to in way of aggrav or dimin is much diff from what had been for some years before
