Formerly pron disease of this pat to be ex. of Diarrh. And that rather in chron. than in acute state. That is not immed arising from any matter to be thrown off but depen on weak & irrit state of intes canal. And this accomp. with dispos. to encr. secret. This opin have seen no reason to alter. On contrary what have farther seen of affect tend to confirm it. Nor have I any more reason to alter opin of prognos. For in this respect mediction given has been fulfilled. Disease in no long time after last spoke of case having termin in recov. This I am inclind to think was if not altog. in consid degree at least affect of treatm here emp On idea given of disease what seemd chiefly necess. was a gentle astring. For by this reason to hope that tone of intest would be restord & encreased secret dimin. Here however an astring united with a mucilag. qualit. seemd partic necess. And as such had recourse to Succus Japon. An artic which though long supp. to be an earth now known to be a veget extr. from a spec of Mim. And which in cases where weak & irrit state occurs in alim canal, am inclind to think one of best astring with which am acq. And at pres. few perhaps in more comm use. Emp. under diff. forms. Of these what am inclind to consider as most eleg. is Inf Jap. Made by simple solut in b. Water And to quantity of I or II ℥ [illegible] diss in Aq. ℥ VI or VIII To this aromat or opiates may occas by added. While by allowing it to settle readily freed from all earthy impur. For this prepar however some length of time is requird. And have at least a more immed extemp. prescript. in diffus of Confect or Elect Japon in Water In this indeed Suc. Japon not only astring For cont. also consid prop of G. Kino. An artic, also of late freq emp in cases of Diarrh. And diff. chiefly from succ jap. in being of more resin & stim nature. These comb. with a prop. of most agreeable aromat. Cinn. & [Nutm] And to all these joind a small proport of an opiate. By which more immed tend. to restrain inord action. Upon whole therefore an artic well adap. for such affect. Often with intent of giving imm ease on diffus in water an add quant of opiate added. But here did not think circum so urgent as to require it. And thought it merely suffic to encrease aromat impgregn by diff. not entirely in comm water but with mixt of distilld water of Cass. From time that this med begun looseness much allev. And from no long contin entirely ceased. But when this case thought it improp. to persist longer in use As might have induced opp state of belly no less distress. And indeed obstin after Diarh always to be [found]. Was from some appreh of this, that on giving up mixt, directed for pat. such a quant. of Magn & [Rhub] as thought would be suff. to keep belly open. And would at same time have tend. still farther to strengt tone of intest. Under this med belly kept regular. And while no return of loosness free from all other sympt. Hence consid farther attend as unnecss. And in treatm of case have I think evid ex of good effects of Confect Japon in combat Diarrh when verging to chron state
