    John Logan

    1787


    No3. Novr 6th 1787.

    John Logan at 25 by trade a shoemaker is affected with severe pain in the breast & in the right hypochondrium. He is also distressd with severe cough attended with little expectoration. The cough generally awakes him from his sleep about one in the morning & continues without intermission for upwards of a quarter of an hour. He is also affected with dulness of hearing. No obstruction can be discovered in the meatus auditorius. He complains of great prostration of strength.

    Pulse about 96 firm & strong

    Appetite much impaird, no thirst

    Belly regular.

    These symptoms began about a forth night ago & have continued nearly in the same state ever since. He ascribes them to exposure to cold, as he has been obliged to work in a cold & damp shop.

    Cap. Pulv. Ipecac Ji. [pro]

    Emet. & sumat bis indies Pulv.

    Crem. Tart. comp. coch parv.

    Novr 17th

    The vomit operated well & the cough was easier for some days after. But it has again returned with great severity affecting him particularly about three in the morning. The powder keeps his belly open but has had no effect in encreasing the quantity of his urine. Expectoration more copious.

    Pulse 98 & he is sometimes affected with sweating during the night but he thinks it is only from the violence of the cough.

    Repet. Emet. una. & Cont Pulv. Crem. Tart comp. u. a.

    The vomit operated well & he is now almost entirely free, from the cough, pain of breast & other symptoms.

    Let him be dismissd
