    Agnes Sead

    (1787-1788)

    No20th Agnes Sead at 18.

In case of this patient a compl. of affect.

But what most distress & what cheifly led her to apply for our assist the Diarh

This had subsist with her for consid length of time.

And to state of intest thus induced are to referr gripes, & tenesm, as well as pain of back & loins.

To same cause also may I appreh. referr ardor urinae

For here without any sympt which could lead to suppos of its proceeding from any other cause.

And by no means uncommon to find such an affect of contig. parts.

But if diarrhoea of long stand have a compl of still greater obstin in cough.

Here I own am not without appreh of Phthis.

For patient at that period of life when very common.

And besides const quickness of pulse has also other sympt of febr. state

Partic intense thirst imp. appetit & want of sleep.

And among other partic may reckon it an unfav. app. that catamen have so long disapp.

These indeed are told had app. but seldom with this pat.

And had ceased to flow prior to comm of any othr sympt.

From this may perhaps be though that some ground for consid as case of Ammen only

And certain that from obstr. of menst. disch all pres. & many other sympt will arise.

But amenorrh much more freq. a conseq. than a cause of Phthis.

And here I own inclind to consid obst. as sympt. of condit of syst.

Although however appreh of Phth. do not think that yet at least is decidedly such.

Nor do I hear considr diarrh as being of colliq. kind, which often sympt of Consumpt.

For then occurs only as sympt of last stages of disease

And seldom of that contin which has already taken place with pres patient.

In treatm. of case considered Diarrhoea as first obj of attent

For while most distress to patient, was at same time that part of affect, which had best chance of remov.

And by means empl. to allay looseness might likewise hope to mitig cough.

Is with these intent that have had recourse to Opium under form of Pil. Theb. & Succus Japon as an astring.

From these hope for mitig if not remov of looseness.

And by affect on cough will be better able to judge of nature of pulmon affect.

    Pract. then directed accord.

But of these either now or hereafter to be empl. reserve observ. till shall again resume consid of case in order of list.
