    Jean Robertson

    (1787-1788)

    No18. Jean Robertson at 36.

In sympt of this patients affect have evid a [compl] of disease.

And these too requiring diff. [perh] in some resp. oppos modes of cure

Hence shall not prob. find it an easy matter entirely to overcome affect.

Some of them however, which may at least hope shall be able to allev.

Of all her sympt the most distr are her pneum affect.

For to this class may referr pain of breast & side, cough, dyspn. & viscid expect.

These here take place to very [consid] degree

And partic distress. to her during night

But no reason to think that are any thing else than catarh.

At least does not here occur [those] partic giving susp of Phthis.

No indicat here either of purul expect. or hectic fever.

While age of patient state of pulse & state of expect all against suppos.

Would considr this part of affect then as example of chron catarh

A disease which well known very diffic to comb. at this season of year in this country & among lower class.

But in other respects sympt in case of our pat. not unfav.

For unless with old people & as a habit affect seldom fatal.

And patient yet far from that period of life at which most apt to become [such]

While however patient subj to some affect referrd to head breast is subj also to others referrd to breast head.

For not only severe pain in fore part of head, but this accompan by vertigo by sometimes even followd by syncope.

In this at loss determ whether have an affect prop. idiopath or only sympt of other compl.

Am however rather inclind to latter suppos.

For headach & vertigo not infreq. conseq of severe cough.

Still oftener however of another set of sympt to which pat. also sub. viz dyspept sympt as indic by cardialgia, nausea, vomiting & flatul

With these symptom headach if not const at least very comm sympt

And partic as thus occurring often accomp both with vertigo & syncop.

Here therfore viewed catarrhal & dyspet affect, as those chiefly to be comb.

But besides these may be though that should here take notice also of anoth.

State viz of Menstr. disch. This we are told while returnd at shorter interv. also to greatr extent than natur.

[Ther] however none of other sympt of menorrh.

And perhaps to be consid as merly constit to pat.

Pract therefore hitherto directed to two former affect.

And after [prescri] use of vomit have directed mixt of Vin Nicot with Bitter & Aromat Tinct.

But remarks on pract reserve to future occas
