Isabel Milne. April 20.
Here no doubt that most urg. part of pat. compl. pain of back. And although [concr] nature of this diff conj. might have been formd, yet to me seemd most prob. that pat. own opin best founded. And that in realit a [musc] affect origin from over exert. This rend prob. from being able to date them [from] partic accid. From situat which occup. And from length of time for which had contin. For that this should have been case partic with a woman adv in life by no means surp. To this pain was I own disp to attrib all other sympt ment in case. An natur conclus. from obs. that these only superv. after pain became severe. While at same time well known that pain prod of various sympt. Of none however more readily than of such affect of stom as here took place. Often also of urine. Espec. when seated in parts contig to the secret. organ. With this view of disease prog more fav than perhaps any other. Could not indeed perhaps exp. that pain would yeild more readily than if of rheum kind. But supp. affect of stomach & urin organs merely sympt, less to be appreh. than if idioph. isch or dyspep. For in that case reason to hope that by mitig of pain both would be removed. And this I think some reason to conject has realy been case. At same time as not altog. certain as to termin of affect can speak only as probab. And perhaps still more ground for uncert. whether suppos fav. conclus. are to consider it as effect of pract empl. Onthisidea mentiond however treatm of case conducted. As means of allev all [symp] seemd first obj to mitig pain. And with this intent, consid affect as local had recourse to topic applic of anod balsam. A formul. I need hardly remark often thus prod of best effect. And indeed not surpr. when [cons] active artic it contains. Partic Camph one of most [penet] subst. with which yet acq. But still more Opium. Effects of which as allaying pain when app to [sensib] nerves, undenia proved by daily obs. With this intent used under various forms. But under none more freq. than that here empl. And partic where pain arises from sprains. Here then exp. that would be prod of [wanted] effect. And that relief of other sympt would be conseq. Was however inclind to think that state of urine deser. some attent And at least that would in no degree interrupt relief from anod bals. that gentle diur. at same time empl. As such had recourse to Crem of Tart. For besides encr. urine exp. benef from it also in other ways. As gently moving belly imag. that might in some degree tend to obv stom ailm. And from acidity might [quench] thirst. Cannot howevr say that these med in every resp. answ. expect. Ifn effect indeed of anod balsm were not disapp. For as immed conseq of applic consid relief of pain of back. And that this affect of med, clearly app. from conseq of omiss. For, happ. to have none of it for some days, pain again returnd. And on recurr to use same [relif] as before. With this relief of pain had also consid mitig of other symp. Partic of stomach ailm. This however could not ascribe to Cream of Tart. For from use no obv. operat ensued. Hence then consid it as solely effect of mitig of pain. And as corrob. opin formerly stated as to nature of case. Might therfore have expected [cure] by persist in Bals. alone. But as urine still scanty same reason which led me to first [use] of Crem of Tart. induc to contin & encr. quant. Should also natur have though of persist in Bals. till compl. recov. But a circum occurr as object. An erupt viz ovr affected part from which consid disch. This viewd as conseq of frict. And of acrid nature of [compost] partic from [illegible] & essent oil. But whether this conj. well founded or not, this condit of [patn] prev farther trial at least for time. And now so far free from pain, that much less necess. Directed therfore that should contin with Crem of Tart alone. But since that has never agan visited us here. An event, which, though cannot speak with cert, am I own disp to attrib, to having no farther occas for assist.
