    John Sutherland

    1787


    No24 Janr 5th 1787.

    John Sutherland at 25, with black hair, complains of severe cough & dyspnoea, accompanied with copious expectoration of yellow coloured matter which has a very bitter taste. He is affected also with pain in his breast & is attacked regularly every morning with profuse sweating which is sometimes preceded by cold & hot fits.

    About three weeks ago he coughd up about half a pint of fluid blood, & since that time the matter expectorated has in general been streakd with blood. He complains also of a bad taste in his mouth which often excites vomiting & he is regularly attackd with this vomiting every morning

    He also complains of great prostration of strength, of pain in his back & of faintness on the slightest exertion in walking.

    Pulse about 160, & pretty full. He sleeps ill. Appetite impaird, much thirst, belly regular, Tongue clean.

    Eyes, languid & sunk.

    Teeth inclining to whiteness

    These symptoms commenced about three years ago & since that time have been gradually encreasing. He can assign no cause for the first attack & always enjoyd good health previous to that time.

    He has used no medicines.

    20th Has continued his powder regularly, symptoms much as before. Expectoration still copious but without any mixture of blood.

    27. Cough, pain of breast & dyspnoea, rather aggravated.

    Cont. Pulv. u. a. & ap. vesic sterno, postea f. fontic. one Ungt. Epispast.

    Febr 3. There has been a pretty free discharge from the blister. But the cough & dyspnoea are still very distressing.

    24. Is much less affected with the looseness, since he began his mixture. But his cough expectoration & other symptoms continue much as before.
