Andrew Greig
(1786-1787)
No23. Decr 29. 1786.
Andrew Greig at 30 with black hair & an unhealthy appearance, was attackd about four years ago with a paralytic affection of the left side, which still continues. It does not however entirely deprive him either of the power of sensation or motion, & with the assistance of a stick he can walk tolerably well. He can raise his hand & arm some way, but the motion is entirely confined to the shoulder joint, as he cannot move either his wrist or elbow joints, nor can he bend his fingers. Nearly the same thing takes place with regard to the lower extremity, the motion of it depending entirely on the thigh joint. He has not altogether the free or proper use of his tongue, & his left side always feels cold. Pulse about 90, but not distinctly felt. Appetite tolerable, sleeps well Belly regular. The above symptoms have continued nearly in their present state, with very little variation, for these three years past. Before that he was for some time deprived both of motion & feeling. And it was he thinks by the assistance of electricity that he got so far well as to be able to walk in the manner he does at present. He ascribes the first attack of his complaint to cold & wet.
