No14 Novr 24th 1786.
Mary Morison at 21 of a delicate appearance complains of cough & dyspnoea with the expectoration of a matter sometimes of a yellow sometimes of a blackish colour and of a bitter disagreeable taste. She is also affected with cold fits & sweating during the night, & in the morning with headach Her mouth is then parchd & she is distressd with severe thirst. She complains also of pain & swelling of her left arm in which there is a considerable weakness & want of ability to perform the ordinary motions, which she cannot accomplish without severe pain in her shoulder & back. The swelling of the arm is much encreased towards night. Pulse about 90 & strong. Belly & menses regular. The above symptoms all commenced at the same time about four months ago, & have been since that gradually encreasing. In the spring she was affected with a spitting of blood, with cold fits followed by sweating. She got better however in the summer, but has again suffered a relapse for which she knows no cause. Hab. Ungt. Terebinth ℥ ii illin paux. [hachiv] affect. bis indies. Decr 2. Has used the ointment as directed. But the pain & swelling of her arm are little alleviated. Though she thinks she can use her fingers more freely than before. She still complains of the cough Appetite good. Belly regular. Pulse 86 Cont. Ungt. Terebinth nec non elicit. [sciont] electri e brachiv affect & Rx. Mist. Mucil ℥ VI Tinct. Theb. Gr LXMcap. ℥p ter de die. Decr 9. The electricity has been regularly used & she thinks that the pain & swelling of her arm are diminishd. She can now raise it with much more ease than formerly. Her cough is nothing diminishd from the mucilaginous mixture Pulse 90 Belly bound. Cont. Ungt. Terebinth & Electri. Cont. [cham] Mist Mucilag & cap. om. m. Pulv. Crem Tart comp. coch. parv. 16. Has regularly continued the electricity & the pain of her arm is much diminishd. She can now move it with greater facility than before. Her cough is very little alleviated. Her belly is still bound notwithstanding the use of the powders. And she is affected with frequent vomiting. Cont. Electricitas. Interm alia med. & cap. om. n. Pil. Aloet gr V nec non Rx. Spt. Vitriol. Ten ℥i Ag. Menth. ℥ VI M cap. ℥p ter de die. Decr 23 The aloetic pills had some effect in keeping her belly open, for the two or three first days. The pain & swelling of her arm are rather encreased. Cough & other symptoms still continue Cont. Med. sed cap. Pil. Aloet grV om m & [a.] [Ucat] Ungt Terebinth Decr 30th. Arm much easier Cough somewhat relievd. But she complains of sickness from the pills. Intem. Pil. Cont. alia Med Janr 6th Her arm is much better & her cough much easier, till last night after exposure to cold & rain, since which it has been somewhat aggravated. Interm. Med. & Rx Mist Mucil. ℥VI Tinct. Theb. Spt. Vitriol ten aa ℥IMcap. ℥p ter de die. Janr 13th. Has used the mixture regularly, but without any alleviation of the cough. She continues free from the pain of her arm though it be still very weak. Cont Mist & Cap. om m. Pil. Theb. grX 20th Her arm continues easy & her cough is considerably relievd But she has hurt her knee much in consequence of a fall & since that she has been much affected with frequent fainting fits & severe vomiting.
