    Peggy Hislop

    (1786-1787)

    Peggy Hislop. Janr 13.

In this case as former. obs. strong indic of Phthis.

Have comm & const sympt of affect. in Cough Dysp. Pain of breast & wasting of habit.

Presumpt from these strong corrob by quikness of pulse & other hec. Sym

    Pulse 160 in min.

If farther proof wanted afforded in colliq. sweats & bloody expect.

But even without these little [doubt]

And from all circum taken tog. not only evid of Phthis, but of bad tend.

For although may have begun as catarrhal, yet has at least so far degen into ulcer. state

For of some consid ulcer at least presumpt from bloody expect.

Here I own inclind even to consid it as of waste tend.

As ex viz of tuberc. Phthis.

At least of this presump. from app.

For very much of fair & delc look with which scroph often conn.

And of this spec. farther presump from acute nature of hect. fever with remark. quick of pulse.

But still more from evid of its being heredit.

Would here therfore concl. [that] Phth of tuberc. kind.

That one or more of these tub. has already degen into state of Sup.

And that thus ulcerat giving at times mixt of blood.

From these circum then natur led to unfav. progn.

For Phth. in every inst a dangr disease.

And partic when of tuberc. kind.

Not indeed here of long stand.

But this when consid rapid prog. rather unfav. than otherwise.

Hence formerly opin that in no long time would prove fatal.

And have seen nothing to lead me partic to alter opin.

But at same time during attend here progr. has not at least been so rapid.

Whether effect of med or not may perhaps be matter of doubt.

But before conject on this subj necess to obs. that Phthis not only disease to which pat subj.

Is affected also with deafness of one ear.

And from this disch of supp. mat.

A circum evid pointing out cause of deaf.

    And such suppur. not uncom.

While state of inflam prod of great [p.]

But after supp. formed in gener. little uneasiness

And often of no long contin.

In most inst healing as readily without any applic, as with it.

And nothing farther necess than attent to cleanlin.

Freq. even rather inconven from applic than otherwise.

Hence therfore here resolvd not to have recourse to any, till found necess.

And entirely to direct Pract view to Phthis.

Resolvd in this case also to make trial of G. Myrrh.

A remed. of which already have had oftener than once occas. to speak

And may referr those who wish for more full acct to Dr Simm Essay.

Shall only obs. that much decievd if in my own pract. have not seen it attend with adv.

Nay manif. exampl. in case alw treated during course of wint. El. [Jand.]

When came under care very evid sympt of Phthis.

    But during empl. entirely ceased.

In so much that now dismissed from farther attend.

And though may return yet cure at least for pres.

As much as by sea voyage, change of clim, country air or like

For well known that where from these recov. even for year or two, pat will yet fall vict from recurr of affect.

Hence then whatever future event, consid it as having there succeeded.

But in case of pres pat. cannot expect so much from it.

    For circum much more unfav.

Consid it however at least deser. trial

And if succeeds strong proof of power.

Here directd Myrrh in comp. powdr

United to equal quant of Crem Tart.

    Two scruples twice a day.

    But small quantit.

Often ℥p of Myrrh alone ter de die

But necess. to give with small doses.

For sometimes disagr. with stom [Vom]

More freq. from action on intest [cause] loosness.

Here evid of prop of small doses.

For even to small quant effect in both ways.

    Did not indeed prod vomit.

But some sickness from morn. dose.

An effect most apt to take place with empty stom.

For then med least easily born.

Accord every day taken with care after though cannot be retain [farther].

But while some sickness, still more effect from action on intest can.

    For there sever. loose stools.

A circum occur as strong obj. to encr. of dose.

For any consid loosness [surface] as exhaust. pat.

And thus adding to debil. induc by disease

Was however unwilling from this circum to discont. trial.

Hence chose rather to attempt counteract. loosness. than des. use of Myrrh.

For this purp. had recourse to Infus Japon.

Made by pouring boiling water on Succ. Jap.

    In diff. proport.

    In gener. ℥i in ℥vi

    Most elegant form.

    As frees from every impur.

May be united with Aromat as Cassia of nutmeg on Infus.

And occas. with Laud in any [prop]

    Here [gr] 60 to ℥VI. 10 to ℥i.

This though not suff. for allev severe pain or induc. sleep yet suff. for moder. diarrh.

Espec. as often very sudden [check] to be avoided.

Accord. have freq. found this mix very useful.

Here effects at first not very consid.

But at same time at least no enc of loosness.

    And from contin some dimin.

Hence hope that by persist in use might be entirely overcome.

While at same time opp afforded for regul. persist in use of Myrrh.

Has now persis in this course for space of month.

And loosness so far gone that at pres. farth. contin of Inf. Jap [unnecss]

Cannot however say that in other resp. better.

Cough indeed at times more moder.

And no app. of bloody expect.

But still as freq as even in worst Phthis

Attend with that cleaness of [tongue] indic purul. expect.

Still remark quick of pulse indic acute hect.

And prof. colliq sweats, reduc. strength & wasting habit.

Hence hopes still as faint as formr

But at least nothing to discour. from contin trial.

Mean therfore to persist in giv. fair trial.

Occas empl. such artic as may be indic for obv. partic sym.

Ex. Infus Jap rep. if return of [Diar]

    Perhaps Vitriol acid for week

But even these only when cir. req

And obj. will be to try Myrr by itself as much as easily can
