    James Brown

    No6th Novr 10th 1786

    James Brown at 66 of a middle stature & healthy appearance for his age, complains of a severe fixd pain in his stomach & belly particularly in the former. He is also affected with cough attended with the expectoration of some viscid matter especially in the morning & evening. And he also complains of considerable loss of strength.

    Pulse 62 & soft & feeble. Skin cool Tongue clean, Belly regular appetite impaird, but without thirst Sleeps ill.

    He was seizd about six weeks ago with a severe loosness which lasted twenty days, & reduced his strength much. Upon the diarrhoea leaving him he was attackd with the pain of his stomach & with the cough which last is somewhat abated. But he can assign no cause for either.

    He always enjoyd good health before these symptoms appeard & has used no medicines.

    Cap. Mist. Tinct. Aromat ℥ p bis indies.

    Novr 18. The mixture sits easily on his stomach. But his pain is nothing diminishd. Pulse natural Belly regular.

    Cont. Mist sed cap. om. n. h. s. Pil. Theb. Gr X.

    Novr 25. The cough is much relievd, as well as the fixd pain of his side

    Cont. Med. u. a.

    Decr 2. Sleeps ill in the night notwithstanding the use of the pills which have had the effect of binding his belly. Stomach complaints much as before

    Interm Pil. Theb. Cont Mist cum Tinct Aromat u. a.

    9. Thinks his strength considerably encreased & he sleeps better in the night, though the pills have been omitted. Belly still bound & he is still affected with the pains.
