    James Liddle

    1786

    No 4th Novr 3d 1786

James Liddle at 30 by trade a shoemaker, of a middle stature, dark hair & sallow complexion, has both his hands, especially about the joints of his fingers, affected in part with a rough scarlet coloured eruption which is very itchy & in part with superficial ulcerations, discharging a sharp watery ichor & very painful, especially in cold weather. These parts often apparently heal up, after which there follows a desquamation of the matter with which they have been covered & this is followed by a fresh discharge of thin water.

Pulse 88 & soft appetite in no degree impaird & his belly is regular.

These symptoms appeard about four months ago under the form of small rough spots on the back of his hands, & since that time they have been gradually spreading.

He knows no cause to which these complaints can be attributed. But he was affected in a similar manner about ten years ago. At that time he employd lime water by way of lotion, & took some cathartic powder, by which his affection was entirely removed in about six weeks.

Since that time he has had no return of them till about four months ago. In other respects he always did & still does enjoy good health.

He has no uneasiness from the application of the ointment. But the eruption continues much in the same state as before.

And he thinks the discharge from the ulcers is rather augmented.
