    Grizel Grieve

    (1786-1787)

    No31 Grizel Grieve at 33.

    Princip affection impaird vision

And this without any obv. disease of eye.

Hence little doubt in consider as depend on condit of optic nerve.

And therefore an inst of Amaur

But occurs with some pecul circum.

Partic severe headachs fits of deliq anim & tend to vomiting.

From these am I own inclind to view it as aris rather from compress on optic nerve, than from condit of nerv. power.

And this compress. am inclind to conject prob. at origin of nerves even in brain

For in vomit. & well as headach have sympt comm. attend of comp brain.

And if such a cause exist is perhaps also orig of other symp

Partic, of fits of heat, flushing & sweating with which often affect.

Not however improb. that [these] & even affect of vision itself in part conseq of a med which this patient has taken for some time past.

Use viz of Laudan. & that too to very consid extent.

To procure sleep is we are told in hab of taking it every night to extent of four tea spoonful.

If of ordin size each may be comp. from 80 to 100 drops.

    Whole quant ℥p.

A proof of influ of habit as dim effect.

For suff. to prove even fatal to those not accust. to use.

But although from grad habit has not this effect, yet may be prod of much inconv.

As far as disease depends on Laud cure will dep on being able to get rid of habit.

And this I own consid as desir on any view.

But at same time on idea before suggested have put this patient on a Mercur. course.

For if any thing capab of remov it is Mercury.

If however conject well founded may look for obstin if not incurab disease.
