    Mary Beverly

    (1785-1786)

    Mary Beverly March 11th

When last mentiond this patients expressd doubts in sever resp. with regard to it.

Then obs. that before could form any prob. idea of disease must see more of it.

Must now add that though this patient now under care for two month doubts nearly as great as before.

Sympt indeed at pres. less num than those descr. in hist of affect.

Now in partic less distressd with stom ailm than before.

And since came under our care have neither seen nor heard of any thing, tending to corrob susp. formerly thrown out of local affect either in stom or liver.

For as far as any fixd pain is now repres as being seated much lower than these viscer.

Formerly remarkd that among other circum Catam. in what might be calld unnat. condit.

Had not indeed arrived at that period of life when regul disch in this way to be expected.

    For only in 14th year.

Before this period disch seldom comm in Brit.

And well known that at comm seldom regular.

But with our patient we are told had once app. under pecul form.

Rather viz disch of white colourd or serous mattr than of blood

From about time of this disch however sympt much aggrav

From this then some presumpt that preceding sympt. even conn [with] it.

And since came under our care some circum giving farthr count. to this suppos.

Partic [threating] of haemorrh from other parts of body.

Not improb that these in some degree vicar to menst disch.

Thus will obs. that at report on 11th of Feb. is ment. to have been [effect] with some degree of bloody vomiting.

And on 25 of same month with disch of blood by stool.

Both these however not unfreq. arise from want of regul. ment disch.

And Haematum in partic much more freq. from this than from any other cause.

To conject that pres affect might be chiefly effect of irregul menst. was led also from anoth circum

Number of sympt viz, app uncom which here took place.

Perhaps no one circum in [illegible] from which in this resp. greater var. can occurr.

Is obs. of a very judic pract Dr Vog. that sympt arising from obstr Mens so many varied & incred. as not to admit of being enum.

Hence then disposed to conject that notwith circum of age, as an evid [markd] unnat condit in this disch. to irregul or rathr defect menst. the pains in diff parts, headach, haemorrh. affect of stomach & like might all here be owing.

And since flux could never be said to have prop. app. that to be consid rather as case of emansio than of suppress.

But while offer this conject. must at same time add that is with very great doubts.

And if [repres] in hist at all well founded cannot consider tend to menst. with want of disch as having been cause of all sympt to which of late subj.

Can as little look upon this as having been concernd in induc of fever to which subj some month before, as in induc bad state of health some years before, which [agn] attrib to over exert.

With pneum affect also, which at one time occurrd, & with vomit of [hydated] can supp to have no conn.

But whatever may have been formerly state of these, have heard nothing of them since became our patient.

And in pres sympt, nothing which may not at least be supposed to possib arise from want of regul. menst.

On this idea of affect progn may be more fav than on almost any other.

At same time, doubts such, that dare hardly venture conj. with resp to termin.

But on idea that regul & natur menst might remove many of affect. have empl. some pract with that view.

Prev. to these indeed othr meas used.

But these chiefly intended for obv. sympt then most urgent.

Thus emet & afterwards mixt of bitter & aromat tinct with view to stom ailm.

Partic. sickness vomiting, flatul & borborygm.

With view to allev of pain added to these Pil. ex Hyosciam.

And as means of expelling wind had afterw. recourse to Assafoet.

But since app of bloody vomiting endeav more partic directed to menst. disch.

And have now put her on use of powder of Rubia.

An artic of which as an [emmenag] have already had occas to offer some observ.

With this have conj. aloet. pills both for keeping belly gently open & as stimul to rectum.

For by this no doubt that tenden to haemorrh by uterus often augm.

Since this course began sympt at least consid easier.

But cannot with any prop be ascribd to med, for no app. of menst.

If however sympt cont as at pres. shall not think of altering course till some reason for doing so.
