    No3. Novr 4 1785.

    Ann McNicol at 40 a married woman of a slender make & appearance rather unhealthy lives by the employment of spinning at present a wet nurseing & has been so for twenty two months, is affected with violent pains in the joints of the inferior & superior extremities, particularly the elbows & knees.

    They swell considerably at night, & are so constantly, in some degree.

    They are particularly painful, on using any kind of motion. There are also, hard swellings, on the legs & thighs, which are acutely painly, when compressd or touchd

    She is also affected with severe cough which is very distressing in the night, & she has some pain about the praecordia.

    Pulse about 70, rather feeble, Belly regular. Menses still absent. No thirst, tongue clean, Appetite tolerable. These complaints in the joints, began about three months ago. She had at first, a kind of sleeping sensation, & numbness in the morning, & violent pains in the evening. Her pectoral complaints, superveend about three weeks ago as she thinks owing to exposure to cold. But she knows no cause for the affection of the joints

    She has used no medicines, she had formerly good health & is of a healthy family.

    Calomel. gr VI Sap. Hispan ℥ p

    Syr. Simp. g. s. f. mas. divid in Pil. XXIV cap. i. bis indies

    nec non habeat Bals. And ℥ii

    illin r. p. affectae

    12. Has taken the pills as directed but did not get the anodyne balsam. Since she began the use of the pills her cough has been considerably relievd & she has in general slept well during the night but is still much affected with the pain in the joints thro the day.
