    Margaret Hislop

    1785

    No2d. Novr 1st. 1785

Margret Hislop at 35, a married woman of a complexion rather florid, but with dark coloured hair & eyes, & apparently of a robust make, is affected with a frequent discharge of blood from the nose, which in general attacks her two or three times a day particularly in the morning & evening. This discharge is seldom to any great extent, rarely exceeding a table spoonful or two at a time. She is also much affected with severe cough & considerable difficulty of breathing. The cough is attended with copious expectoration of viscid mucus. But she has never observed any blood mixed with the mucus although the severity of the cough often induces epistaxis. She is also at times attackd with shivering fits, alternating with augmented heat, sometimes followed by sweating, & in general accompanied with headach.

Pulse 96, small & hard, her dyspnoea which is in some degree constant is in general aggravated after taking food.

Appetite tolerable good. No thirst. Tongue clean & moist. Belly regular. Urine in natural quantity but in general rather high coloured. Menses regular both in time & quantity & have flowed moderately since Friday last.

These complaints began about two years ago, at the time when she gave suck to a child. She was first attacked with great shivering & coldness, these were succeeded by cough which has continued ever since, though it has always been considerably easier during the summer. The discharge of blood from her nose only began about fourteen days ago & the frequency of the attacks is now greater than at first.

She attributes the commencement of her complaints to exposure to cold during the time she was nursing her last child & when she was very weak from having given suck for near two years.

    She has used no medicines

12 Has taken the powder as directed & there was a pretty copious discharge from the blister since which she has had no return of the Epistaxis but her cough still continues to be very severe. She is also affected as formerly with shivering fits succeeded by heat & sweating, but complains less of her headach & there is now little discharge from the issue.
