Sarah Allan
(1785-1786)
Janr. 14
In case of Sarah Allan No25. an unmarried girl in 25 year, has as well as in that of Ed Ross, many dyspep. sympt. And may justly consid it I app. as an example of that affect. Not however without some pecul. Among these may justly mention severe pain to which subj. when stom empty. For gener. pain of stom greater when loaded with victuals. And perhaps in part from this cause there occurs very gener. with this disease [anor] or avers to food. In pres case however appetite on contrary is uncomm keen. Presumpt that both these pecul from same cause. And to me app. by no means improb. that to be attrib to [illegible] furnishd by stom. Now no doubt that this acts as powerful cause of digest. And as little that may be diseased in diff. ways. Sometimes occas morbid affect from encr. sometimes from dimin energy Here from two circum last ment. some presumpt that of former kind. On this idea of disease should not be disp. to consid it either as dang or even obstin. For encr. energy in syst. [rarly] of long contin. Indeed very gener. even of itself soon degen to natur stand. often below it. Though this however may be natur progr. yet where does not spon. occurr diff. to say by what means to be prom. For on state of secret. have it not in our power to oper. very readily. No doubt however that secret in gener. dep on condit of action in secret. organ. And this again may be affectd by causes acting on extrem of excret. In this manner not improb. that stom bitters as have been calld often consid influ. With this intent have here had recourse to combin of bitter & aromat Tinct And with view to expuls of flat. have to these added Ag. Menth. Pep If by this relieved shall natur. direct contin of use. But if affect eithr aggrav or not dimin, may here I think exp. some benef from opium And not only as means of allay pain but of affect causes on which depends For no doubt that very much affects states of other secret into alim canal as evinced by influ in Diarrh. Cholera &e. If however here recourse to use shall afterw. state sent. with resp to it at more length.
