No43. Febr 26th 1785.
Betty Brown at 24. Complains of severe cough attended with great difficulty of breathing. Is troubled also with an eruption on her skin, which principally takes place in the extremities & consists in very large blotches, which in some parts, are of a red colour but in most places, covered with a white scurff. Appetite good Belly natural. Catamenia have not appeard for these eight weeks. About the commencement of last spring, the eruption first appeard, & has since continued to encrease. No cause is assignd for her complaints, & she has used no medicin Rx. Acid Vitriol ℥ i. Axung. [Porcin] ℥ ii ter opt simul ut f. Ungt. illin p. aff. om. m. & vesp. nec non. Rx. Acid Vitriol ℥i. Ag. Font. Mucil. G. Arab aa ℥p.Mcap. coch. parv. bis indies. ex [Ag.] Cyanth. March 6th Has taken the mixture as directed. It has had no obvious operation but she thinks that her breathing & cough are easier. The ointment has been regularly applied. And the affection of her arms is considerably diminishd. They are also much easier than before. Cont. Med. u. a. 12. Urine considerably encreased from the mixture & the affection of her arms is much better. Cont. Med. u. a. 19. Still observes that her urine is considerably encreased in quantity. Cough almost gone & she is little affected with the dyspnoea. She suspects that she has been pregnant for three months. The eruption on her arms is much better & although the redness continues there is now little of the white incrustation Cont. Med. u. a. 26. The affected parts of her arms are rather of a reder colour than formerly which she ascribes to her having been employd in washing cloathes. Urine still more red. And she is now free from her pectoral complaints. Cont. Med. u. a. April. 2d. The eruption on her arms is much as at last report but that on her legs is somewhat diminishd. Cough & breathing easier.
