Cath. Forbes. April. 2d. 1785
When this patient came under our care, was appar. subj to two affect. Cephal viz & Ophthalm. These may unquest occurr at same time when yet unconnected. Here however consid them as consist but part as it were of same affect. Of this presumpt both as freq. found to be connected, & as here of same standing. While at same time patient free from every other affect. For absence of catamenia may here consider as conseq of patient age. Had already arrived at 50th year a period before which this disch often ceases. Ophthalm as well as other active inflamm. am inclind to attrib to encr. action of vessels in eye. And here consid augm impet in head as being cause both of this sympt & of headach. As neithr sympt of long contin nor to any great degree, was in hopes that might soon be removed. And this I imag. would be most readily accompl. by [illegible] from circul sympt. & by determin from head. For answ both intent brisk cathar seemd to be well suited. Had therefore recourse to [conjoind] powdr of Jallap, from which can in gener. obt. a copious & free evac. From this therefore expected both suffic degree of deplet. & likewise determ to intest. canal. And thus imagind that should obt. dimin of impet in head. While this med however directed internally thought it also advis to have recourse to an extern applic to eyes themselves. And for this purpose directed use of a solut of Sal. Plumbi. From saturn applic in gener best effect often obt. as allaying action of vessels. And in ophthal. in partic, saturn solut, espec when conj with proper evac, used with greatest advant. In effect of these med were not disapp. From first dose indeed of the Jallap sickness & vomiting were excited. But second brisk & free operat. And under use, togeth with trial of saturn solut, headach much relievd Ophthalm almost totally removed And at succeeding report, almost only compl. sickness & uneas at stom. Probab. in some degree at least effect of purgat empl. In this situat contin of formr med seemed now unnecss. And as gentle cordial ordered merely a prop of aromat tinct diff in peppermint water. Since this directed however have neither seen nor heard any thing farther of patient. And I own am inclind to attrib. her desert. to having no farther occas for assist. A circum often happening to us in Dispens pract. But whether that case or not had here example of good effects of this Cathart as [counterin] both Opth & Headach
